Airless vs Pneumatic: How the Three Options Compare

Every zero-turn tire decision comes down to three options: the Michelin X Tweel, the OTR NDX Grassmaster, or staying with pneumatic (air-filled) tires. Straight comparison, no scores:

The information above is provided as a general guide based on manufacturer specifications and typical usage scenarios. Actual performance, durability, and ride quality may vary depending on equipment type, mowing conditions, terrain, and maintenance practices. Always consult your mower’s manual and specific product documentation for detailed compatibility and installation requirements.

Airless Mower Tire FAQ

Real questions from mower owners, answered from the manufacturers' own published documentation: Michelin's Tweel FAQ and Warranty Guide, and OTR Wheel Engineering's NDX product pages. Where a number is a manufacturer claim, it is attributed as one.

Choosing and Fitting

Will a Tweel fit my mower?

Only if the bolt pattern and offset match. Because the Tweel incorporates the hub into the design, Michelin's guidance is to know your vehicle's bolt pattern and offset before purchasing, and to confirm with a dealer or the fitment guide. Use the Farm & Trail Tweel fitment guide or call 877-203-4939 with your mower model and deck size.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

Can I put a Tweel on my existing rims?

No. Per Michelin, the Tweel is a combination of tire and wheel in one unit; it replaces the entire tire, wheel, and valve assembly. You unbolt the old assembly and bolt the Tweel on.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

What if it does not fit after I buy it?

Michelin's policy: if you are not 100 percent satisfied, return the Tweel with the original sales receipt to the place of purchase within 30 days. Farm & Trail's return policy applies to purchases made there; see the return policy.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ; Farm & Trail policy

Are these sold one at a time or in pairs?

Both the Michelin Tweel and the NDX Grassmaster are sold and priced per individual tire-and-wheel assembly at Farm & Trail unless a listing says otherwise. Compare per-unit prices, with shipping included, when cross-shopping.

Living With Tweels

Do Tweels ride rough?

Michelin's position is the opposite: the poly-resin spokes give low vertical stiffness, absorbing energy and returning it, and Michelin lists a better ride than pneumatics, better side-hill stability, and lower, more uniform contact pressure among the Tweel's advantages. The ride is different from air, but by design it is consistent for the life of the unit because the contact pressure is fixed and never changes with a slow leak.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

Do Tweels work in cold weather?

Per Michelin, ambient temperature does not affect performance: the polyurethane used in the spokes is stable across temperatures and has shown robust performance from -30F to 100F.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

My mower sits all winter. Will the Tweels flat-spot?

Michelin says a flat spot can potentially occur after extended storage, and that it dissipates after riding approximately 100 yards. It is temporary, not damage.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

Is there anything to do after installing Tweels?

Two things, per Michelin: after 8 hours of break-in, re-torque the wheel hardware to proper values in an x-pattern; and level the mower deck after installation, then check it again after roughly the first month of use. Beyond that, the service interval is the same as pneumatic tires.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

What happens if some spokes get cut or torn?

Spoke damage from impacts or cuts does not end the Tweel. Per Michelin, the unit remains useful with up to 20 percent of spokes damaged, and a certified Tweel technician can arrest a spoke crack by blunting the crack tip, potentially doubling the life of that spoke. Warranty covers more than 5 completely broken spokes, more than 2 consecutive broken spokes, or separation deeper than 2 inches.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ and Warranty Guide

Can I replace just one Tweel, or do they have to match?

Michelin's guidance for pairing a new Tweel with a worn one on the same axle: keep the height difference within 3 percent, and consult your OEM specifications. In practice, that means a lightly worn partner is fine and a heavily worn one is not.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

How long do Tweels last, and do they age out like car tires?

Michelin states small Turf Tweels are lasting on average 2 to 3 times longer than their pneumatic counterparts, and that the 10-year replacement recommendation for passenger tires does not apply to Tweels; the materials differ, so monitor condition and consult a dealer if performance or appearance changes. Every Tweel carries a date code showing its week and year of production.

Source: Michelin Tweel FAQ

What warranty do Tweels have?

A 3-year time-based prorated limited warranty against workmanship and material defects, for the life of the original usable tread (down to 4/32 in remaining) or 3 years from purchase, whichever comes first. Impact damage, cuts, and overload are excluded. Keep the invoice; the serial barcode on the interior hub surface is the key identifier for a claim.

NDX Grassmaster

How is the NDX Grassmaster different from a Tweel?

The NDX is a complete airless tire and wheel assembly using OTR's patent-pending multilayer bias construction with engineered structural supports and a deflection management system, so it mounts and behaves like the conventional assembly it replaces. It covers rear drive positions; the Tweel line also covers front casters. Full breakdown in the comparison section and the detailed comparison at Farm & Trail.

Source: OTR Wheel Engineering

How long does an NDX last?

OTR's claim is specific: up to 2 times longer than other airless tire options, including under heavy loads and after sustaining damage. Note the comparison is against other airless and run-flat tires, not against pneumatics.

Source: OTR Wheel Engineering

Does the NDX have a warranty?

OTR's authorized distributors list a 3-year, unlimited-hour warranty on the NDX line. Confirm current terms at time of purchase.

Source: OTR authorized distributor documentation

Is the NDX gentle on lawns?

The Grass Master tread is OTR's turf pattern, with an S-shaped design that optimizes ground contact for traction while staying gentle on lawns, including during sharp zero-turn maneuvers and on slopes. OTR also states the deflection management system produces a ride equal to or better than a pneumatic tire.

Michelin Tweel Rear Tire for Sale

Michelin X® Tweel™ Turf Drive Tires

Michelin X Tweel Turf airless radial tires completely eliminate the common problems of unseated beads and flat tires on zero turn radius mowers. They have a consistent hub height which helps ensure the mower deck produces an even cut, while their full-width poly-resin spokes provide excellent lateral stability for outstanding side hill performance. The spokes also help dampen the ride for enhanced operator comfort, especially when navigating over curbs and other bumps. Equally important, high performance compounds and an efficient contact patch are designed to provide a long wear life that is two to three times that of a pneumatic tire at equal tread depth. No Maintenance
The Michelin X Tweel Turf airless radial tire is one single unit, replacing the current tire/wheel/valve assembly. As a result once they are bolted on, there is no air pressure to maintain, and the common problems of unseated beads and flat tires are completely eliminated.
No Compromise

Michelin Tweel vs NDX Grassmaster: Which Airless Tire?

Last updated: August 2, 2026

Both eliminate flats. They cover different positions at different prices. The one-minute version:

Michelin X Tweel

  • One-piece airless unit: steel hub, poly-resin spokes, bonded tread
  • Covers front casters and rear drive positions
  • Michelin-rated at 2 to 3x the wear life of a comparable pneumatic
  • Rear sizes from $670.00; casters from $199.00

NDX Grassmaster

  • Airless tire with sidewalls on a steel wheel, mounts like the assembly it replaces
  • Covers rear drive positions (14 and 16 inch wheels)
  • Grass Master or Zero T II tread options
  • Rear sizes from $496.99, roughly $110 to $170 less per tire than the comparable Tweel
